Google Chrome 78 Update | Yesterday Google started rolling it out its next iteration of Chrome browser which is 78.0.3904.74 across platforms. In this newest update, Chrome brings new features, performance improvements, and bug fixes. In this blog post, we are going to see the high-level overview of notable features with few tips.
What’s new in Google Chrome 78 Update?
Chrome 78 has new tab hover information and animation as shown below. By default, you will see only the text info, but you can customize to display the image by leveraging the flags.
Please make sure that you know what you are doing by changing the flags. If something goes wrong, you may need to reset your Chrome browser settings or reinstall the browser itself.
Tab Hover Cards Flag
Go to chrome://flags/#tab-hover-cards and flip the menu to Enabled, Enabled B, or Enabled C to enable. If you want to disable, you can select Disable.
You need to restart Chrome browser after you flipped the flags.
Tab Hover Card Images
Go to chrome://flags/#tab-hover-card-images and flip the menu to Enabled, if you want to see the preview thumbnail image in tab hover cards.
Force Dark Mode for Web Contents
Go to chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark to check whether this flag is enabled or not. This flag renders the web page automatically to dark even though the website doesn’t have this feature. There are multiple options available under this flag. Websites may look weird, but if you opt CIELAB-based conversion, renders may look good.
Password Checkup Tool
Google Chrome has an extension which checks your password has a breach or not. This extension has been integrated in the browser itself in this version.
Go to chrome://flags/#password-leak-detection to enable this feature. It is not enabled by default.
Once enabled, you can toggle this feature in chrome://settings/passwords.
New Customization Menu in New Tab
Go to below flags to customize menu and new tab.
Above are experimental flags and must be enabled. Below is the gif animation where you can see lots of colors customization.
DoH aka DNS over HTTPS – whenever you visit a website, browser determines which server is responsible to deliver a website called DNS resolution. With DoH, Chrome will encrypt the DNS resolutions for security and privacy. This is an experimental feature in Chrome 78.
Below are the mapping table which Chrome tries to resolved DoH.
